Each Tuesday, Coach Johnston provides an assessment of the five Quarterbacks in the NFL whose performance, he believes, has been the most critical to their team’s success.
THROUGH WEEK 9
  1. Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts

Now that Manning has been an integral part of two Colt victories vs. the New England Patriots since last season, talk of a perceived inferiority to Tom Brady can be dismissed.  It was vintage Manning in Foxborough on Sunday night – one of the NFL’s toughest road venues.

TELLING STATISTIC: Two consecutive road wins in Denver and New England have put Manning’s big-game abilities on display.

  1. Marc Bulger - St. Louis Rams

Bulger has maintained a consistently high level of play during the Rams’ current three-game losing streak - this to go along with 1,040 yards passing during the same period.

TELLING STATISTIC: Bulger’s Interception Percentage has dropped to .03 - the lowest in the NFL - despite being third in the league in pass attempts.

  1. Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints

Brees bounced back from his bumpiest two-game stretch of 2006 (6 TDs-5INTs) to throw three touchdown passes in a convincing road win at Tampa Bay.  Overall, continues to lead a resurgent Saints team with consistent play.

TELLING STATISTIC: Brees has suffered only 8 Sacks, often a sign of a Quarterback who makes decisions - and throws - early.

  1. Philip Rivers - San Diego Chargers

Rivers’ formula for success in his first full season has been more about playing mistake-free football, rather than dominating games.  With the Offensive weapons available to him in San Diego, that may be enough to lead his team to one of the best seasons in Chargers’ team history.

TELLING STATISTIC: A Quarterback Rating of 96.7 through half of an NFL season is impressive - especially for a young Quarterback who had attempted only 30 passes prior to ‘06
  1. Damon Huard - Kansas City Chiefs

Huard has done what is needed on a weekly basis for the Chiefs, having attempted as many as 38 (@ Arizona Week 8) and as little as 15 (Sunday @ St. Louis) passes in Kansas City wins in 2006.

TELLING STATISTIC: While throwing for 6 TDs and 0 INTs during the Chiefs’ current three-game winning streak, Huard has emerged as a solid decision-

            David Carr - Houston Texans
