Each Tuesday, Coach Johnston provides an assessment of the five Quarterbacks in the NFL whose performance, he believes, has been the most critical to their team’s success.
THROUGH WEEK 8
Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts
The tremendous anticipation of Sunday night’s matchup in Foxborough vs. the Patriots almost overshadows just how dominant Manning has been in 2006.
TELLING STATISTIC: Pick one: A 66.5% completion percentage, 0.8% INT percentage, only 7 sacks in 245 pass attempts, 8.02 YPA………Manning continues to do damage in a lot of ways.
Marc Bulger - St. Louis Rams
Bulger played as well - or better - in the loss @ San Diego as he has in all of the Rams’ four victories. St. Louis will need such consistency, as they are in the midst of their toughest five game stretch of the season.
TELLING STATISTIC: A TD-INT ratio of 12-1 allows the Rams to reap the rewards of 35-plus pass attempts per game - without the risk.
Tom Brady - New England Patriots
Spreading the wealth is now a way of life for New England, as evidenced by the fact 10 different Patriots caught Brady passes in a big road win vs. Minnesota. A huge test comes at home vs. Indianapolis on Sunday night.
TELLING STATISTIC: Three road wins vs. teams with a .500 or better record reflects Brady’s ability to win in tough spots.
Philip Rivers - San Diego Chargers
The Chargers’ first win over a quality opponent in 2006 featured a typical Rivers performance - a high completion percentage and YPA, as well as an avoidance of any major mistakes (no INTS or fumbles).
TELLING STATISTIC: A TD-INT ratio of 6-2 in four road games speaks to Rivers’ developing composure.
Damon Huard - Kansas City Chiefs
This career NFL backup has emerged in Trent Green’s absence, having demonstrated solid decision-making in most spots. With the exception of Week 6 @ Pittsburgh, Huard and the Chiefs have played well vs. top opponents.
TELLING STATISTIC: In the Chiefs’ four wins, Huard is a combined 7 TDs-0 INTs (1 TD-1 INT in their three losses) - meaning the Kansas City Offense needs him to make a handful of big plays each week in order to win.
OTHER TOP QB PERFORMERS:
Donovan McNabb - Philadelphia Eagles Rex Grossman - Chicago Bears Carson Palmer – Cincinnati Bengals David Carr - Houston Texans Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints
