Each Tuesday, Coach Johnston provides an assessment of the five Quarterbacks in the NFL whose performance, he believes, has been the most critical to their team’s success.
THROUGH WEEK 7
  1. Marc Bulger - St. Louis Rams

Bulger has been consistent all season, including two losses by a combined 9 points.  Coming off the bye, Bulger needs to maintain his current performance level, as the Rams’ next four weeks include matchups with the Chargers, Seahawks, and Panthers - all on the road.

TELLING STATISTIC: An Interception Percentage of .05 means Bulger throws one pick for every 200 pass attempts.  If he can do that over a season, the Rams will play deep into January.

  1. Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts

Another dominant regular season from Manning is taking shape.  Manning’s week-in/week-out performance has become almost an automatic for the Colts - and their 6-0 start reflects that.

TELLING STATISTIC: Manning has suffered only 7 Sacks in 206 Pass Attempts - protection that will be tough to maintain in the next two weeks @ Denver and @ New England.

  1. Donovan McNabb - Philadelphia Eagles

Three losses by a total of 11 points.  Do not be fooled by the Eagles’ record – or by their Quarterback’s stats this past Sunday.  Although McNabb had 3 INTs vs. Tampa Bay (to go along with 3 TD passes and 300 yards), he managed to rush for 76 yards – including some timely drive-saving runs.  McNabb often finds multiple ways to gain yards, and it took an improbable kick on Sunday to make his efforts come up short.

TELLING STATISTIC: McNabb’s 8.85 Yards per Pass Attempt is more than 2 yards above his career average, and is indicative of a Quarterback who is becoming better and wiser..

  1. Philip Rivers - San Diego Chargers

Rivers continues to be a young Quarterback that does not lose games for his team - a luxury in the NFL.

TELLING STATISTIC: An Interception Rate of 1.6% is better than 14 of the top 20 rated NFL Quarterbacks - impressive for a Quarterback at this stage of development.

  1. Tom Brady - New England Patriots

Brady’s precision throwing in the short and intermediate range passing game – with a periodic shot up top - is much like an extension of the running game.  This is vintage Brady in that he has always done what the Patriots need to win.

TELLING STATISTIC: The Pats are 5-0 when Brady makes 29 or fewer pass attempts in a game.  This tells us Brady is his best this season when managing the game - not taking it over.

OTHER TOP QB PERFORMERS:

Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints
            David Carr - Houston Texans
Chad Pennington - New York Jets
            Carson Palmer - Cincinnati Bengals
            Rex Grossman - Chicago Bears
