Each Tuesday, Coach Johnston provides an assessment of the five Quarterbacks in the NFL whose performance, he believes, has been the most critical to their team’s success.
THROUGH WEEK 6
  1. Donovan McNabb - Philadelphia Eagles

McNabb nearly helped the Eagles pull out a road victory Sunday after falling behind 17-3 in the second half vs. the surprising Saints.  Two 3rd Quarter touchdown passes rallied the Eagles to 17-17, before falling 27-24.  McNabb’s lone INT was a meaningless throw for the endzone at the end of the first half.

TELLING STATISTIC: Five of McNabb’s top seven receivers average better than 16.5 yards-per-catch, meaning he continues to get the most out of every throw.
  1. Marc Bulger - St. Louis Rams

Played well in a tough 30-28 divisional home loss to the Seahawks, and continues to impress with his poise.  Bulger needs to maintain his current performance level, as the Rams’ next four weeks include matchups with the Chargers, Seahawks, and Panthers.

TELLING STATISTIC: An Interception Percentage of .05 means Bulger throws one pick for every 200 pass attempts.  If he can do that over a season, the Rams will play deep into January.

  1. Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints

Brees rebounded from early miscues to grab a huge victory for a Saints team that is learning how to win – over one of the NFC’s best – McNabb’s Eagles.

TELLING STATISTIC: The fewest sacks (6) among Quarterbacks with at least 200 pass attempts indicates Brees is making good decisions – and making them quickly.

  1. Philip Rivers - San Diego Chargers

Still waiting for the first-year starter to falter, but Rivers’ completion percentage of nearly 70% and a QB rating of 100.6 say that’s not likely.

TELLING STATISTIC: Better than 25% of Rivers’ passes have gone to LaDainian Tomlinson, suggesting he is comfortable picking his spots with high percentage throws - as he continues to learn about NFL defenses.

  1. Tom Brady - New England Patriots

Brady has been instrumental in New England’s quick 4-1 start, despite enduring another off-season in which some big names left Foxboro via free agency. Deion Branch’s unhappy exit has further limited the weapons Brady has at his disposal. The bottom line on Brady is that he led his team to an early season division lead without playing his best football.

TELLING STATISTIC: 59 of 88 Completions to TEs and RBs demonstrate Brady’s ability to create positive yardage, despite a lack of dominant wideouts as targets.

OTHER TOP QB PERFORMERS:

            Peyton Manning - Indianapolis Colts
            Jake Delhomme - Carolina Panthers
            Matt Hasselback - Seattle Seahawks
Chad Pennington - New York Jets
            Rex Grossman – Chicago Bears
